The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) staged a dramatic comeback with their bowling attack to clinch a thrilling 36-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and secure their place in the IPL 2024 final.
Put into bat, SRH witnessed a fiery start from Abhishek Sharma before Trent Boult's double strike removed him and Rahul Tripathi. Travis Head and Aiden Markram steadied the innings briefly, but Sandeep Sharma's slower delivery ended Head's promising knock. The middle order faltered further as Avesh Khan bagged two quick wickets.
Heinrich Klaasen anchored the innings with a well-constructed fifty, but Sandeep Sharma dismissed him just after the milestone with a clinical yorker. Shahbaz Ahmed, the Impact Sub, couldn't extend the late surge as Avesh Khan completed his three-wicket haul. Despite the spinners failing to pick up wickets, they played a crucial role in containing the flow of runs.
Chasing a seemingly modest target of 176, RR's batting unit crumbled under pressure. Tom Kohler-Cadmore's early dismissal set the tone, and despite a blazing knock of 42 from Yashasvi Jaiswal, SRH's bowling attack tightened the grip. Shahbaz Ahmed emerged as the bowling hero, claiming three crucial wickets, including the vital scalp of Sanju Samson, to leave RR reeling at 79/5.
Dhruv Jurel's valiant unbeaten 56 offered a glimmer of hope for RR, but the lack of support from other batsmen proved costly. The disciplined bowling attack of SRH, spearheaded by Avesh Khan and Shahbaz Ahmed, restricted RR to a paltry 139/7, falling well short of the target. While the seamers bagged most of the wickets, the spin trio of Abhishek Sharma, Washington Sundar, and T Natarajan did an excellent job of stifling the run flow.
This victory sets the stage for a mouthwatering rematch between SRH and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final on Sunday. Both teams had previously clashed in Qualifier 1, with KKR emerging victorious. SRH will be aiming to avenge their defeat and lift their third IPL trophy, while KKR will be looking to add another title to their collection. The stage is set for a thrilling finale to the 2024 IPL season!
